Suntory Garuda Beverage Beverage Celebrates Mizuiku 2020

More Than 3,000 Elementary Students Graduated from Mizuiku; Strategic Memorandum of Understanding with HPAI; and the Mizuiku 2021 Exposure Plan

Jakarta, Indonesia, December 8, 2020 – Today, Suntory Garuda Beverage (SGB) celebrates the end of Mizuiku 2020 with a number of proud achievements. One of them was realized through the graduation procession for the first time for more than 3,000 students from 18 elementary schools (SD), spread across six regions in Indonesia, as well as the announcement of the winners of teaching and writing competitions for teachers, and drawing competitions for students. The graduation certificate is signed and delivered directly by representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia (KLHK), the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) and the Association of Indonesian Adiwiyata Activists (HPAI) to school representatives.

This graduation ceremony for elementary school students is a continuation of the graduation that Mizuiku has carried out for more than 500 elementary school teachers and 200 junior and senior high school teachers who have completed a series of trainings (Train-the-Trainer) in October 2020.

"Mizuiku - I Love Clean Water" is a sustainable program from Suntory in Japan to promote awareness and importance of clean water to children so that they can become agents of change in the preservation of clean water. Mizuiku started in 2004 in Japan and launched in Indonesia in 2019.

“We are very happy because more and more private company are supporting the Movement for the Care and Cultured Environment in Schools (GPBLHS), increasing the teaching capacity of teachers and Adiwiyata certification in schools, one of which is SGB through the Mizuiku program. Throughout 2020, we have seen for ourselves how committed the Mizuiku program is to conserving clean water and the environment through educational programs, teacher and school training as well as water conservation programs and facilities. Not only in Jakarta, but also in Gowa, Banjarbaru, Sidoarjo and Tangerang. We hope that next year, Mizuiku will continue to be sustainable and even expand to other areas so that more students and teachers are exposed to these educational modules,” said Cicilia Sulastri, SH., M.Sc. Head of the Community Training and Development Center for Environmental Generations - Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia.


Ong Yuh Hwang, Chief Executive Officer & President Director, Suntory Garuda Beverage, said, “Like the success of the Mizuiku program in other countries, the key to the success of Mizuiku 2020 in Indonesia lies in five components, that are support from stakeholders, close collaboration with teachers and schools, well-structured modules, interesting learning components and competencies, reliable facilitator. Therefore, we really appreciate all forms of collaboration from all stakeholders to Mizuiku from the beginning until now. Not only from the government, teachers and parents, but also elementary school children who play a very big role in conserving water and the environment in Indonesia. The graduation ceremony today confirms our appreciation for the contribution of our children. "

The closing ceremony for the Mizuiku 2020 year was also marked by the signing of an official memorandum of understanding for the Suntory Garuda Beverage and HPAI to collaborate in implementing Mizuiku for at least the next two years while simultaneously aligning the Mizuiku learning module with Adiwiyata values.

As previously stated, in 2020, Mizuiku formed a synergy with HPAI, based on the alignment of the Mizuiku Program with the Adiwiyata program, namely the Environmental-Based Education Program in Schools. The Mizuiku program supports sustainable environmental education programs in schools.

On the same occasion, the Mizuiku team also presented several Mizuiku 2021 work plans which various possibilities are being explored:

First, Mizuiku will educate more schools and elementary students in 2021 with an increase of approximately 30% compared to the number of students and teachers in 2020, including strengthening support to target schools for creative and innovative water conservation efforts.

Second, in addition to continuing the Mizuiku education program in six regions in Indonesia, Mizuiku will begin expanding to the Bogor region in 2021. Several Adiwiyata-certified schools in Bogor are currently being studied for inclusion in the Mizuiku program.

Third, formalize a long-term collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry by signing a memorandum of understanding as Suntory Garuda Beverage's commitment to support the Ministry's efforts to conserve water and the environment in Indonesia through educational programs.

Fourth, collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Culture to integrate Mizuiku modules into the primary school curriculum through the central curriculum and books so that learning about water and environmental conservation can be enjoyed by more elementary students in Indonesia.
